NEWTON ABBOT SPIRITUALIST CHURCH was awarded a certificate by the SNU
On August 12th 2006, Newton Abbot Spiritualist Church was full and the atmosphere was tremendous. The church is always full of love and joy but never as much as that afternoon when over eighty members, mediums and friends joined together in the celebration of all that the committee, the members and supporters of Newton Abbot SC had achieved under the leadership of Phil and Sheila Scott. They have all worked so hard and deserved the recognition. |

| Newton Abbots Spiritualist Church in East Street is the oldest nonconformist place of worship in the town. It was established in 1697 as a Baptist Chapel, at that time it consisted of only four mud walls and a couple of small windows. It only had enough room for six or eight sittings which was enough to accommodate all the evangelical nonconformists in the town. When Napoleon threatened this country with invasion it was given up and used as a storehouse for arms and ammunition, the town then being garrisoned by soldiers. In 1819 the old chapel was demolished and the present building built. It was the only chapel in Newton Abbot to have it's own burial ground but has been closed for burials for many years now. Elizabeth Solman by deed of feoffment granted the chapel and it's burial ground to the minister and legal members thereof for the time being for ever. The chapel became a spiritualist church in the early 1930's. | |

We on the Committee would like to
tell you how we achieved our award, Four years ago our church was in a sorry state, needing a lot of repairs and loving care, it was in grave danger of being closed down, that was until our two knights in shining armour our President and his wife Phil and Sheila Scott came along to help, with their enthusiasm and inspiration, the church has been resurrected and is now a place of beauty and light, a true house of God, made possible by various fund raising events, workshops, auctions, open days etc where everyone takes a part. Our membership has increased dramatically, as people are encouraged to come in and feel at peace and oneness, Sheila and Phil have been working for spirit in the spiritualist movement for nearly forty years they work tirelessly with love and devotion and have encouraged us to do the same. All members of our church are important to us, and we are all part of one big happy family. The achievements made in the past 4 years have included building a disabled toilet and ramp, to meet requirements by law, repair to the crumbling plasterwork and roof, new windows, complete refurbishment inside with new rostrum, chairs and carpets, and lately an extension at the rear of a new kitchen and a memorial glass wall and a new lynch gate, all made possible by donations, people giving of their time freely, and shear hard work. Beside all this, we have also raised various amounts for local e.g. Newton Abbott Hospital League Friends and global charities. Including £5100 for the tsunami appeal, donations to the rotary club to help with their shelter box scheme, and a donation to the earthquake victims of Pakistan. We are also raising funds for the orphans and aids sufferers in India. No one in our congregation is made to feel an outsider all are welcome, whatever religion they are, we work in Love and understanding, that everyone has a part to play no matter how small. Every job done in the church is as important as the next. |
